WHAT TO DO TO REDUCE THE RISK OF TAKING A RAPE DRUG
1) Read the article on date rape drugs on my blog;
2) Remember that the most used date rape drug isthe alcohol, so be careful when you consume it and be aware of your limits;
3) Avoid leaving your contact details to someone you've just met;
4) Try to always keep a clear head when socializing with new people;
5) If you choose to drink, it is better not to exceed one drink every hour and no more than three drinks in one night (variable from one to three based on the alcohol content, individual predisposition and the quantity of each drink);
6) Never leave your drink unattended and don't give it to anyone, if in doubt, have them bring a new one;
7) If you are dating a person for the first time, tell a trusted friend of yours;
8) Trust your instincts, if the situation doesn't seem good to you, find an excuse and leave;
9) Unless you're at a bar, don't get someone you don't know to make you a cocktail and open your own bottle;
10) If you suspect that your drink has been tampered with, use detector strips. You can buy them online;
11) If you believe you are the victim of a rape drug intoxication, go to the emergency room immediately (or in any case within 24 hours).
HOW TO NOTICE YOU HAVE TAUGHT AN ALTERED DRINK
Most date rape drugs act in 15-30' and the symptoms remain for a few hours. Symptoms vary from substance to substance, however attention should be paid to the appearance of:
1) Sudden reduction of inhibitions;
2) Difficulty speaking and concentrating;
3) Dizziness;
4) Sensory disturbances such as pins and needles, blurred vision, hallucinations or a feeling of reduced control over your body;
5) Nausea and vomit;
6) Memory loss;
7) Disorientation;
8) Paranoia, or a feeling of unmotivated fear of everything.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE BEEN SUBJECTED TO SEXUAL VIOLENCE
1) Call a trusted friend;
2) Call the police and file a report;
3) Call the toll-free number 1522, dedicated to accepting reports of violence against women. It provides immediate support to women victims of violence inside and outside the family unit;
4) Do not change or wet your clothes before consulting your doctor;
5) Go to the hospital to perform an assessment of any injuries (useful for the purpose of reporting), a urine test for drugs and a gynecological visit;
6) Next you'll need to take a pregnancy test and tests to rule out sexually transmitted diseases;
7) In anti-violence centers you can find the support of social workers and psychologists to be followed and advised.
